De tweede versie van zijn vertaling had FitzGerald uitgebreid tot hondertien kwatrijnen en hij had de tekst aanzienlijk gewijzigd. In de inleiding nam hij afstand van de Franse vertaling van J.B. Nicolas (1867), die een mystieke interpretatie van de teksten had gegeven.
