Th. Hyde
Thomas Hyde (1630-1703) was professor of oriental languages at Oxford University and librarian at the Bodleian Library. In 1700 he published 'Veterum Persarum et Parthorum et Medorum religionis historia'. (Oxford, 1700). Here we find the first European translation of an Omar Khayyám quatrain:
"O combustus combustus Combustione!
Vae, à te est Ignis Gehennae accensio!
Quousque dicis, Omaro misericors esto?
Quousque Deum, Caput misericordiae docebis?"
